Private Eyes
by Steven Dietz
Directed by Michael Edan
July 13 - August 4, 2012
A clever, funny, perceptive, artful, comedy about the illusion of reality, the potency of lust, the power of deception, and ultimately the mystery of love. A play within a play - within a play.
There’s an actor, an actress, and a director. There’s an affair. Or perhaps the affair is part of the play being rehearsed. Or perhaps one character has imagined all of it simply to have something to report to their therapist. There is a mysterious woman who seems to shadow the others. There’s two murders . . . or is it three? Or are the murders part of the play being rehearsed, or has one of the characters imagined it? The audience itself plays the role of detective in this clever, funny, perceptive “relationship thriller” about the illusion of reality, the potency of lust, the power of deception, and ultimately the mystery of love.
“The cleverest and most artful piece presented at the 21st annual [Humana] festival . . . a Chinese box full of tricks and surprises.” The Chicago Tribune
“Dietz’s spiraling structure and breathless pacing provide enough of an oxygen rush to revive any moribund audience member.” The Village Voice
