Auditions for the October 7th workshop directed by Paul Russo

Sunday, July 21 from 3 – 5 pm
with call backs (by invitation) Monday 7/22 at 7pm
Eugene O’Neill’s One Act Play
The Rope

Mary Sweeney – A child of ten years. Playful and innocent.

Abraham Bentley – 60+ years old. Weak, bent and twisted from rheumatism, he has difficulty walking with a cane, but can use it as a weapon. He presents as crazy – probably suffered a stroke pre-curtain because he can quote scripture but can barely express himself now, except for bible verses. He has a plan. He is going to show them all!

Annie Sweeney – 35 to 45 years. Abraham’s daughter from his first marriage and Mary’s mother, wife to Pat Sweeney.
Annie is everyone’s primary caregiver, and she is worn out, unappreciated, and frustrated with her role. She resents Abraham but she is fulfilling her duties as a daughter caring for him and hopes to inherit Abraham’s farm with her husband when he passes.

Pat Sweeney – 35 to 45 years. Annies husband. Carpenter, and Irish Catholic. Schemer. He thinks he’s smarter than everybody, but he really isn’t. He thinks he can hold his liquor but he gets progressively drunker as the story unfolds. Pat wants Abraham’s farm, and money, if he has any.

Luke Bentley – 21 years. Abraham’s son from a second disastrous marriage to a gold digger and floozie. Luke’s mother ran off when he was five leaving him with his abusive father. He left home at 16, after stealing money from his father, and has returned after five year to see what kind of welcome he will get – and to confront his childhood issues with Abraham.
