Chad Hudson will be directing Act I of The Little Dog Laughed by Douglas Carter Beane for the October Workshop. He is holding auditions on August 11, with callbacks (by invitation) on the August 12. All are welcome.
The play follows the adventures of Mitchell Green, a movie star who could hit big if it weren’t for one teensy-weensy problem. His agent, Diane, can’t seem to keep him in the closet. Trying to help him navigate Hollywood’s choppy waters, the devilish Diane is doing all she can to keep Mitchell away from the cute rent boy who’s caught his eye and the rent boy’s girlfriend.
Characters
Mitchell: (20s – 30s, any ethnicity) A charismatic young actor on the rise, he is closeted and grappling with his homosexuality. He is torn between the image he presents to the public and his true feelings for Alex.
Diane: (30s-40s, any ethnicity) Mitchell’s agent, she’s a powerful and driven woman who sees herself as more important than Mitchell. She’s willing to do whatever it takes to protect his career, even if it means manipulating his personal life.
Alex: (20s, any ethnicity) A young man who works as a male prostitute, he falls in love with Mitchell and helps him understand his true feelings. He is a contrast to Mitchell’s image, representing a more honest and vulnerable side.
Ellen: (20s, any ethnicity) Alex’s girlfriend, she is a party girl who is both tough and naive. She is a supporting figure in the story, observing the dynamics between Alex and Mitchell.
