NOTE: This is NOT an Elmwood Event

Auditions are to be held for a modern-dress production of Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew” on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 and Wednesday, April 5, 2017 starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Ramapo Senior Center at the intersection of Mayer Road and Route 202 in Montebello (319 Haverstraw Road) on the second floor. All roles, except Baptista, are open. Parts to be cast are:

PETRUCCHIO (male, any race, 40-55) – Overbearing, a little coarse, and powerful. Doesn’t know the meaning of the word, “no.”

KATE (female, any race, 40-55) – Very bright, but unable to interact socially, resulting in her being called a “termagant” or “shrew.” She is probably suffering from a behavioral disorder, but her family’s misunderstanding of it has caused her great pain.

LUCENTIO (male, any race, 20s) – Straight-laced and sweet, wealthy, young man. Like a young “Niles Crane.”

TRANIO (male, any race, 20s) – Lucentio’s personal assistant. A clever schemer – almost always think three steps ahead.

BIONDELLO (boy, any race, 14-18) – Lucentio’s servant – excited to be part of Tranio’s schemes. Open, friendly, and outgoing.

GRUMIO (male, any race, 30-75) – Comic relief. Petrucchio’s manservant – always kidding around and joking while others are being serious.

BIANCA (female, any race, 20s) – Kate’s beautiful sister. She pretends to be demure, but is actually coyly manipulative and willful.

GREMIO (male, any race, 55+) – Older suitor to Bianca – not the brightest bulb, but sweet (within the context of an older man seeking to marry a woman decades younger).

HORTENSIO (male, any race, 40-60) – Another suitor to Bianca. Somewhat ineffectual, but tries to be clever. Good comic role.

BAPTISTA – {Already cast – father to Kate and Bianca}

PEDANT – (female, any race, 40-60) – Talkative but easily confused woman tricked into pretending that she’s Lucentio’s mother. Good comic role.

VINCENTIA – (female, any race, 50+) – Lucentio’s actual mother – Wealthy, overbearing, and domineering.

WIDOW – (female, any race, 40-60) – Tart and thorny — witty and refuses to submit to any man.

ENSEMBLE (any gender, race, and age) – At least two actors/actresses to play Tailor, Haberdasher, servants. Not just walk-ons. Each has lines and a character.
