Elmwood Playhouse Welcomes Sharr White, Author Of ‘The Other Place’

Hudson Valley resident Sharr White will be at the performance of his play The Other Place on Saturday, July 30 at the Elmwood Playhouse in Nyack NY, and will talk and answer questions with the cast, director and audience following the performance.

Sharr had his Broadway debut with his play The Other Place, which was produced by the Manhattan Theatre Club, and opened at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on December 20, 2012. The play, directed by Joe Mantello, starred Laurie Metcalf and Daniel Stern. The New York Times reviewer of the Off-Broadway production wrote: “A sense of disorientation unites audience and protagonist in ‘The Other Place,’ a new drama by Sharr White about a forceful businesswoman confronting the onset of an illness whose nature keeps eluding her grasp.” The Other Place received two Outer Critics Circle Award nominations, for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play and Outstanding Actress in a Play.

“When we first meet her, Juliana, the protagonist (or is she the antagonist?) in my play The Other Place, is the embodiment of this fragile arrogance of intelligence. She is by any measure one of the smartest people on earth: witty, sharp, sexy, aggressive and self-assured. And yet because so much of herself hinges on her estimation of her great mind, she also exists in a terrible state of vulnerability. Take her mind away—even a little bit of it—and what does she have left?”

Sharr’s other plays include: Iris Fields, Six Years, Sunlight, Annapurna and The Snow Geese.

The Other Place opens July 15 and runs through August 6. Tickets available at elmwoodplayhouse.com
