Jason Summers once again brings his dynamic talents to Elmwood Playhouse as both director and choreographer of an exuberant musical comedy. The Prom follows his standout directorial debut of last season’s Young Frankenstein. His journey with Elmwood began in 2018 when he choreographed She Loves Me. Since then, his versatility has shone through in acting and singing roles in Next Fall, Night and Day, Clybourne Park, and The Play That Goes Wrong. Whether behind the scenes or center stage, Jason’s creative energy is unmistakable.

I love the challenge of finding movement that’s not only character-specific, but also original and exciting for an audience. The Prom is dear to my heart with its much-needed message of inclusiveness, acceptance, and love.”

While he often takes on projects as either director or choreographer, Jason especially relishes the opportunity to do both. “It allows me to shape the story in so many ways,” he shares. “I love the challenge of finding movement that’s not only character-specific, but also original and exciting for an audience. The Prom is dear to my heart with its much-needed message of inclusiveness, acceptance, and love.”

Jason’s professional life has been steeped in theater from the start. Early performances in community theaters paved the way for a career that spans off-Broadway directing and choreography, national tours, and regional credits. For the past 18 years, he’s served as co-owner and Artistic Director of the Westchester Sandbox Theater, an educational performing arts organization dedicated to nurturing young talent.

Reflecting on his experiences at Elmwood, Jason says, “I’ve found a place that reminds me of the warmth and joy of my early community theater days. Everyone here is generous, kind, and a true pleasure to work with. The cast of The Prom is a delight. Not only will our audiences be wowed by their talent, but they will be moved and motivated by the show’s powerful message.”
