Open Caption Performance: For “The Shape of Things”, Old News is Good News
On Thursday June 1, The Shape of Things will have its 0pen caption performance. Oddly enough, we are excited to report that this is not a “special event.” In its ongoing commitment to accessibility and inclusion, and with the support of a grant from the Orange and Rockland Community Partnership Program, Elmwood has made an open caption performance a regular occurrence for the final Thursday performance of each show. So we are thrilled to report this news as a “reminder” rather than an “announcement.”
At the open caption performance, a digital board positioned above the stage displays the dialogue and sound effects. A captioner from C2, the premier theatrical and event captioning provider, is present at the performance, controlling the timing of the display and entering adjustments and changes in real time as needed. Having a live captioner ensures that the display is authentically reflecting what is happening onstage. An American Sign Language interpreter is present in the lobby to assist as needed with box office or patron questions. In addition, patrons with hearing assist devices can link to the T-Coil Loop system (which is operational at all performances.) The response from our Deaf and Hard of Hearing patrons and the community at large has been overwhelmingly positive.
Elmwood’s 2023-24 season will offer a final Thursday subscription that allows subscribers to reserve their seats at a substantial discount for the open caption performance of every show in our exciting new season!
The Shape of Things is directed by Omar Kozarsky and stars Dylan Coonrad, Elinor Greenway, John Carlos Lefkowitz, and Emma Sarnacki. The show runs through June 3. The open caption performance of The Shape of Things is Thursday June 1 at 8 p.m. It’s old news, but it is good news. It is our hope that open caption performances become so common in theaters that they are not news at all!
