On the eve of his departure for Philadelphia, Gar, an Irishman, with his private thoughts in the form of a humorous doppelganger onstage, observes the life ahead and the provincial existence he is leaving behind. As the housekeeper putters about, his curmudgeonly father again engages in a daring game of checkers and the neighborhood the lads toddle in to have a word of farewell.
