The Prodigy

THE PRODIGY features award-winning actor and playwright Rick Apicella in a one-man show about a trainer who discovers a powerful wunderkind of “The Sweet Science” of boxing.

Apicella transforms himself into multiple characters including Andrew Sorocco the trainer, Rosalyn the neighbor, Jimmy McLaughlin the champ, Mitch Mitchum the promoter, and other characters. Their lives will never be the same after meeting “The Prodigy”, a young self-trained boxer whose skills are as mysterious as his demeanor. Is he an athlete savant? Does he have a secret training ritual that makes him a powerhouse in the ring? And what is it about this young fighter that draws Andrew to want to support? Can he protect this young boxer from the world of professional fighting that can turn the boxing ring into a circus ring?

“Rick plays multiple roles with a passion and a specificity I have not seen in years. The show is truly wonderful because of Rick’s acting work, AND also because of his story. THE PRODIGY is a fantastic, compelling play with awesome acting.”

– Ken Wolf, Artistic Director, Manhattan Repertory Theater
