It’s Thanksgiving and three generations of the Blake family gather for a quintessential family reunion in the Tony award-winning one-act play The Humans by Stephan Karam. Director Lisa Spielman is impressed with the playwright’s ability to capture realistic conversation on difficult subjects with a light hand. “It is a dramedy, filled with equal parts humor and hurt, about a group of people who love each other but still wrestle with their basic human fears, disappointments, and frustrations.”
Lisa, active at Elmwood since 2007, is an actress, singer, Board member (past President), and director, having last directed Our Town at the Playhouse. She views this play as a powerful ensemble piece, in which each character is fully developed with their own voice. “Each family member meets the other where they are and all struggle to hold onto their connections.”
Reflecting on the cast, Lisa also regards them as a well-meshed family. “They are generous with each other and have bonded since day one. It has been a joy to witness this production develop. I have another reason to be thankful on Thanksgiving.”
Audiences will too.
The Humans runs from Friday, November 15-Saturday, December 7. Tickets can be purchased at https://www.elmwoodplayhouse.com
